Practical Test

The driving test has been designed so you can demonstrate how you can drive safely with a knowledge and understanding of the Highway Code.

The driving test is has been designed to see if you can:

  • Drive safely in different road and traffic conditions
  • Know The Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving

The test will consist of:

  • An eyesight test. If you fail this part your test will not continue
  • You will also be asked two questions about vehicle safety checks. You will be asked one 'show me' question and one 'tell me' question. Answering one or both questions incorrectly will result in a driving fault being recorded.

The practical part of your test will last approximately 40 minutes. During this time your driving and ability to reverse your vehicle will be accessed. The test will include one exercise from the following:

  • Turning in the road
  • Reverse parking
  • Reversing around a corner

You may also be required to perform an emergency stop exercise.

During your practical test you will be accessed for approximately 10 minutes of independant driving. This part of the test is designed to access your ability to make independant decisions whilst driving safely.

You are allowed to take someone with you during your test. This would normally be your driving instructor, although you are permitted to take a relative or friend as long as they are over 16 years of age.

Once you have completed your test.

The examiner will inform you whether or not you have passed your test. This can be discussed with your instructor present.
