Show Me, Tell Me
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level?
A: Identify high/low level markings on header tank, top up with engine coolant and water (when cold).
Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
A: Brake fluid should be between the minimum and maximum mark (this car has a warning light, which lights up on the dash borad when it's low).
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has enough oil.
A: Remove dipstick, clean and replace and remove again checking that the level is between the minimum and maximun mark (when cold).
Open the bonnet, identify where the Windsereen Washer reservoir is and tell me how you check the level.
A: Identify reservoir, top up with one part window screen wash and three parts water (If it's really cold 50/50 mix). Check this once a week.
Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
A: Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
A: Operate switch (turn on ignition if necessary), walk round vehicle.
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
A: Manufacturer's guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don't forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.
Tell me how you make sure your head restrait is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
A: Your eyes should be aligned with the centre of the head restraint.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to show that they have sufficient tread depth and that thier general condition is safe to use on the road.
A: 1.6mm of tread depth across the central 2/3 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. No cuts, bulges, nails or glass.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.
A: ABS Warning light on dash board will stay on.
Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly.
A: Applying the indicators or hazard warning switch and walking around the vehicle to check functioning of all indicators.
Show me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
A: If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.
Alternatively, turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.
Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).
A: Push the horn button.
Show me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
A: Apply pressure to the footbrake. The peddle should feel firm not spungy.
Show me how you would check the parking for excessive wear.
A: If the handbrake travels up more than three clicks, it's needs attention.
Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers.
A: Pull the wiper stalk towards centre of steering wheel, this cleans the front wind screen. By turning the end of the stalk 180 degrees will clean the rear window screen.
Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.
A: Rear: Press the heated rear window button. Front: Turn side vents onto door windows, turn knobs to demist, turn heat control into the red and turn fan on accordingly.
Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.
A: Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light. Pull indicator stalk to the centre of steering wheel.
Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them.
A: Put dipped headlights on and turn centre of indicator stalk.
